LOW ENFORCEMENT ABILITY AND WEAK GOVERNANCE CREATE MANAGEMENT CHALLENGES ESPECIALLY IN NORTHERN BRAZIL WHICH HAS INTERNATIONAL BORDERS WITH SEVERAL COUNTRIES AND THE LOWEST NUMBER OF AGENTS FROM PUBLIC ENVIRONMENTAL INSTITUTIONS. NORTHERN BRAZIL ALSO HAS THE LARGEST PROPORTION OF THE VULNERABLE HUMAN POPULATION (E.G. HIGH POVERTY RATES LACK OF ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES) CREATING SOCIOECONOMIC CHALLENGES. THESE FACTORS CONTRIBUTE TO MAKING THE FINANCIAL BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING IN THE ILLEGAL SONGBIRD TRADE MORE ATTRACTIVE.THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE CONSERVATION OF TEN SPECIES OF SONGBIRDS TARGETED FOR TRADE FOR SINGING COMPETITIONS AND LISTED AS PRIORITY SONGBIRD SPECIES IN THE SPECIES CONSERVATION CATALYST FUND (SCCF) IN NORTHERN BRAZIL. OF THESE 10 SPECIES AT LEAST FOUR SPECIES (SPOROPHILA MAXIMILIANI S. AMERICANA S. MINUTA AND S. </title>
    <description type="1">
      <narrative xml:lang="en">AQUASIS will document habitat use and migratory movements for neomigratory shorebirds that utilize the Banco dos Cajuais, a regionally important non-breeding site in northeast Brazil recognized by the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network (WHSRN). This information will be used to develop and implement habitat management strategies that will maximize the quality and quantity of habitat available for shorebirds. Previous surveys have documented sizable portions of the global population of Red Knot and Short-billed Dowitcher utilizing the Banco dos Cajuais during the non-breeding period, thus this site provides critical habitat contributing to the long-term conservation efforts of these migratory species. Partner objectives include (1) assessing local movements between key habitats used by Red Knot, Short-billed Dowitcher, Ruddy Turnstone, and Semipalmated Sandpiper at the Banco dos Cajuais. These four shorebird species are of high conservation concern and are listed on the 'Road to Recovery' (Road to Recovery 2022). Using the Motus Wildlife Tracking System, AQUASIS will be able to track the local movements of these shorebirds and quantify the amount of time spent in the available habitats at the site. They will also track the northbound migration of shorebird species of high conservation concern at the Banco dos Cajuais using solar-powered satellite transmitters, targeting Red Knot, Short-billed Dowitcher, and Ruddy Turnstone. This new technology will help discern migratory pathways to inform offshore wind turbine placement to minimize risks to at-risk shorebird species. They will also use these data to identify staging areas for northbound migration, and assess connectivity from the Banco dos Cajuais, all of which is largely unknown and critical to conserving these species. Finally, results will be integrated with the existing community outreach efforts of AQUASIS in Icapu, the municipality where the Banco dos Cajuais is located. Through this project, partne</narrative>

    <description type="1">
      <narrative xml:lang="en">The project's main goal is to increase the number of Brazilians who are concerned with conservation and understand the importance of conserving the Cerrado region, as well as the migratory birds that winter there. The partners plan to use two approaches: communication using literature and media (radio programs) and education through the training of teachers in the public school system to mobilize them for the conservation of these bird species and the remaining areas of the Cerrado in the region. They plan to reach different target audiences with different methodologies. For children, they will produce stories that strengthen their ties to these species of birds. For the general population, they will generate radio programs that creatively deal with these issues. Students in the public school system from 10 to18 years will be reached by the action of teachers trained with tools of art, methodological strategies and awareness. The products previewed in this project, such as books, radio programs and educational material produced by teachers, can be applied in other areas of the Cerrado in Brazil. Thus, this project can start to reverse the reduction in the availability of wintering grounds for species that depend on the Cerrado domain.</narrative>

      <narrative xml:lang="en">SAFEGUARDING WINTERING HABITAT FOR RUFA</narrative>
    </title>
    <description type="1">
      <narrative xml:lang="en">The northwestern coastline of Brazil hosts millions of shorebirds, having been identified as the third most important area for wintering shorebirds in South America including rufa Red Knot, Whimbrel, and Semipalmated Sandpiper. This area is also highlighted as the primary wintering area for the 'North Coast of South America' Recovery Unit of rufa Red Knot. Multiple protected areas have been designated along this coastline, but most are in management categories with the least restrictions on use (e.g. extractive reserves, environmental protection areas) and have limited active enforcement or shorebird-specific management. Furthermore, with an expanding space flight launch site, the development of new ports, and the potential installation of wind energy facilities, shrimp farms and oil exploration, it is essential to better understand and safeguard the critical habitats for shorebirds in this region. The project will compile existing data to identify, delimit, and prioritize key areas for safeguarding and enhanced management. An aerial survey with a Red Knot specific protocol and increased International Shorebird Survey monitoring will add to the existing data to better understand the current status of shorebirds in the states of Para and Maranho. With the critical sites better defined, a stakeholder engagement process will be undertaken to define existing management structures, assess threats, identify opportunities for conservation action, and make recommendations regarding integrating shorebird needs within protected area management plans.</narrative>

In partnership with University of Michigan, this project will support a conservation effort for multiple amphibian species in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, by determining the prevalence of chytrid fungus infection among six endangered frog species in relation to the abundance of the non-native American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus). .Specific activities include: (1) field surveys at five Atlantic Forest sites to determine the abundance of American bullfrogs; (2) field surveys of chytrid fungus prevalence among focal endangered species; (3) DNA sequence analysis of the chytrid fungus detected at the survey sites to determine the relative distribution and frequency of different chytrid genotypes; and (4) outreach to government personnel and other key stakeholders to inform them of the presence of chytrid fungus in the Atlantic forest, the association between chytrid, bullfrog farms, and escaped bullfrogs, and to discuss mitigation measures."</narrative>

    <description type="1">
