Elephants in the Selous ecosystem were estimated at over 100,000 individuals in 1976, declining by 85% in 2014 to approximately 15,000 animals. The most recent wave of poaching pressure peaked between 2010 and 2013 with an estimated six elephants killed each day. Poaching has since stabilized to about two elephants killed every month in the Selous Game Reserve, one of the largest protected areas in Africa, where reserve staff and patrol teams are responsible for controlling illegal activities across an area nearly the size of West Virginia. This project builds on sustained anti-poaching efforts to provide essential security for elephants and to work towards the stabilization and recovery of one of Tanzanias largest elephant populations.
