Bahamas (the) has a legislative, regulatory and legal framework for controlling the importation and distribution of HCFCs in its territory. This framework requires that the servicing of equipment be carried out in accordance with procedures specified in the Good Practices in Refrigeration Training Manual or as otherwise specified by the National Ozone Unit (NOU), and controlled substances be recovered by a certified technician at the recovery and recycling centre before equipment disposal. The Bahamas committed to achieve a minimum of 30% renewables in the energy mix by 2030 that will allow for a 10% Residential Energy Self Generation Programme. However challenges in increasing the penetration of renewable energy (RE) systems still remain in terms of grid stability, entailing the upgrade of the electric grid, and a reliable electricity network with adequate distribution capacity and network infrastructure. Therefore this Readiness proposal is designed to enable the environment to transition the Bahamas electrical grid systems towards the 30% introduction of renewable energy by 2030. Stage II plans to build on stage I and continue with the activities such as training of technicians on good servicing practices, as well as safe handling of low-GWP alternatives. At the same time support will be provided to the Customs Department to ensure that the #Ozone Module# is updated and well covered in their internal trainings. E-licensing is also foreseen to support the NOU in improving HCFC licensing and quota system and help in the transition to the national single window system. Stage II will also include establishment of online training course to ensure that post-HPMP the technical capacity of technicians can be sustained without the HPMP funding. Awareness in the sector is also foreseen. This is followed by commercial units and chillers (packaged units, roof top units). The most commonly used refrigerants are HFCs, HFC-based blends, and hydrocarbons (HC-290 and HC-600A). The consumption of alternatives in The Bahamas is affected by the proximity to the US market as the Bahamas depends heavily on it. There is still a growing demand for HFCs driven by the increased imports of HFC-based equipment. While other countries in the region may have opted quicker to the HC, the Bahamas followed the US market trends.
