Over 3 years in 3 locations, this project will provide literacy, numeracy, vocational and business training to women who are marginalised because they have experienced sexual, physical, financial or psychological abuse – or simply because they are women. UK - Department for International Development (DFID) MannionDaniels Association Centrafricaine de Traduction de la Bible et Alphabetisation Tearfund Girls’ education in CAR is considered a low priority, so girls spend less time in formal or informal education than boys. Although this has been exacerbated by the recent conflict, it is a long-term issue, resulting in several generations of women without basic literacy or numeracy skills (in 2010, 67% of women in CAR were illiterate). This lack of basic education is largely a societal issue: ACATBA’s 2017 survey of women in current literacy classes found that in the same household, boys are sent to school but girls are not. The reasons given for this were largely cultural, such as the perception that girls are less intelligent and therefore can’t learn; the view that girls should marry early and have children, and so don’t need an education. Consultation with beneficiaries in ACATBA’s current programme in April 2017 confirmed that the majority of women (83%) entered the course with no literacy and numeracy skills, and the remaining 17% had very limited skills. As a result, women buying or selling in the market were frequently cheated by men giving / demanding incorrect change or over-charging; not only does this decrease the household income, but several women also said that this led to physical abuse from husbands or other male family members, as ‘punishment’ for poor trading. This is to be achieved by establishing sustainable waste management and developing recycling and behavioural changes in Lamentin that can be adapted in the rest of Carrefour. By leveraging a local waste collection and recycling social business, 15,000 primary beneficiaries in Lamentin, Carrefour (metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince, Haiti) will have access to sustainable solid waste management (SWM) services which reduce ocean plastics. We will mobilise a further 5,000 beneficiaries in Lamentin to change their SWM behaviours.
