Biological extinction was averted through the establishment of three captive-breeding groups using tortoises confiscated from traffickers. These efforts have been successful, with over 12,000 tortoises now in captivity. However, both free-ranging and captive tortoises remain vulnerable to poaching and theft, with contraband tortoises traced to countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, China, and Canada. Our project addresses these issues by: 1) permanently marking tortoises using three redundant systems, 2) strengthening Community Conservation Teams to monitor reintroduced tortoises, 3) continuing conservation awareness programs in local villages, and 4) enhancing regional coordination between enforcement agencies in key countries through workshops to improve interdiction of trafficked tortoises. The Burmese Roofed Turtle population declined due to chronic over-harvesting of eggs from riverside sandbanks. The introduction of monofilament fishing nets in the 1960s further devastated the species, leading to its presumed extinction by the late 1990s. Rediscovered in the Dokhtawady and upper Chindwin Rivers in 2001-02, the population in Dokhtawady vanished after a dam inundated the nesting area. Conservation efforts along the upper Chindwin River began in 2004-06 and have prevented biological extinction. However, the wild population remains tenuous and it leads this species as IUCN Critically Endangered. This will be done by: 1) forming at least five village conservation groups in the lower slopes of the Pauk Sa range; 2) facilitating village conservation agreements for a core conservation zone with the 5 villages including resource use mapping to establish the extent of swidden agriculture, mapping key landscape features used by villagers to identify their fields, digitizing these maps and including land cover data to identify a core conservation area (will utilize a participatory workshop to accomplish this); 3) facilitating development of village land use plans (needed to provide a mechanism to control village land use, and to better cooperate with the Forest Department and other government departments on village development and sustainable forestry); 4) facilitating VCGs in the development of community forestry licenses (needed to allow for a mixture of production, protection and regeneration on state forest lands such as Reserve Forests and is intended as a mechanism to divest responsibilities and benefits of sustainable forest management to local communities); 5) distributing small village development grants for sustainable community forestry, agroforestry, and sustainable agriculture; 6) carrying out a conservation awareness effort (through village consultation efforts) to increase understanding of the values and threats to Myanmars natural history, and to justify the interventions proposed under the project; 7) mapping the habitat of the gibbons; 8) using standard population sampling techniques to estimate/confirm the populations of all groups in conjunction with habitat mapping under item 7; 8) habituating one gibbon group for ecological studies; and 9) studying tree phenology and carrying out baseline ecological surveys.
