<narrative xml:lang="en">Fondo COVID-19 AID 011876 - The initiative increases access to energy to contribute to the resilience and socio-economic development of the rural areas of the provinces of Bujumbura Rural, Ruyigi and Rutana in Burundi; the renewable energy (RE) market is strengthened by acting on two lines: 1) access to solar energy for agricultural AGR, commercial activities, basic health services and households as an enabling factor for development, with professional training and job creation; 2) relying on the "Italian system" and on the experience of the network of private companies involved in the initiative to reduce the barriers to private investment in RE the main driving force behind development. In this context, the specific objective is to improve and strengthen the agricultural production chain, the RE business chain and the quality of basic health services through a secure, affordable and sustainable supply of solar energy. The strategy is divided into two strands:F1) Access to energy for 3,100 families, 315 IGA, 12 health centers, including: 1. Awareness on the nexus of energy-development (R1); 2. Support for the development of IGA and female micro-entrepreneurship (R2); 3. Certified professional training (R3). We opted for small-scale interventions, with customized solutions to the local context, affordable, simple, and replicable that exploit the leverage effect on the target communities in the case of female micro-entrepreneurship; provide for an economic partnership of the beneficiaries for greater sustainability and ownership; they favor the creation of employment and income diversification.F2) Stimulus for private investments through: 4. public-private consultation to improve the legislative framework that discourages investments, intervening on technical and non-political aspects (R4); 5. Promotion in Italian companies of business opportunities in Burundi in the RE (R5) sector.</narrative>

<narrative xml:lang="en">The PAS Initiative - Sustainable Food Policies in Burundi contributes to guaranteeing access to healthy, nutritious and sufficient food for all those residing in some municipalities of the provinces of Bujumbura, Ruyigi and Rutana, through the improvement of the local food production system. The general objective of PAS is in line with SDG 2 of the 2030 Agenda, and more specifically with target 2.1 (“By 2030, end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round“), proposing to intervene on the possibility of access to food through the structural improvement of the food production system at local level, via the promotion of the effective use of natural and material resources, process and technological innovation, and circular economy. The specific objective, in line with OSS 2.4, is to improve the productiveness of the primary food production systems by reinforcing their climate change adaptation capacity. By making the production systems more resilient and adapted to climate change (climate variability, climate shock, soil exhaustion, water scarcity, etc.), PAS contributes to guarantee the resilience of the primary production. The beneficiaries of the project, i.e. the small farmers and small breeders of the Municipalities of Mutimbuzi (Bujumbura Province), Ruyigi and Nyabitsinda (Ruyigi Province) and Bukemba and Rutana (Rutana Province), will see their production capacity maintained and increased, with a significant improvement in access to food and therefore a reduction in food security. Actions on the resilience and resistance of primary productions to climate change also guarantee the sustainability of future use of land and water, and contribute to mitigating the effects of climate change by reducing gas emissions from agri-food production plants. In order to support and facilitate the adoption and dissemination of the proposed climate-smart production practices, the structuring of an enabling environment is foreseen by the project, with the creation of mechanisms of public-private collaboration (multi-stakeholder Roundtables) for planning and managing the territorial climate-smart, sustainable and resilient food production systems; the result of the work of the multi-stakeholder Roundtables will be the definition of Territorial strategies on the topic.</narrative>

<narrative xml:lang="en">The territorial partnership between Parma and Bujumbura was officially presented in March 2019 at the Italian diplomatic representation and the local institutions. The shared commitment aims at strengthening the local agri-food sector to promote employment, food security and the capacity of the Municipality of Bujumbura for socio-economic development and the valorisation of its territory. Thanks to the agri-food vocation of the territory of Parma (Unesco Creative City for Gastronomy), the project’s goal is to promote a supply chain approach for the cultivation of tomatoes and to establish a product transformation consortium. To this aim, the Municipality of Parma has involved significant institutions (CNR National Research Council, CNA), the University of Parma (Department of Food Sciences) and technical partners (Azienda Agraria Sperimentale Stuard) with recognized expertise in transferring know-how along the tomato supply chain which is recognised worldwide as an Italian excellence.</narrative>

<narrative xml:lang="en">The DUFUNGURE NEZA initiative, "Lets eat well" in Kirundi language, stems from the collaboration of ICU and international partners Associazione Microfinanza e Sviluppo - AMS and UCBM and the local partner COPED, to contribute to the achievement of food security in rural areas in northern Burundi. In particular, it aims at strengthening the resilience of rural populations to food and environmental crises in the villages, hills and municipalities of Kirundo Province. To this end, it proposes a holistic and integrated approach of intervention on three levels corresponding to different geographical extensions, to strengthen existing socio-economic development models and to better respond to the needs of families, cooperatives and MSMEs in the agri-food sector (agriculture, livestock and fishery). In particular, at the level of the family (municipality of Busoni) the initiative intervenes on the change of Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (KAP approach) of families to support nutritional self-consumption, so that they can ensure adequate food needs in a healthier environment, through a Community approach that promotes solidarity and social cohesion (Result 1). At the level of cooperatives in the agri-food sector (Kirundo Province), managerial, productive and financial capacities are strengthened to contribute to the professionalisation and improvement of productive capital, so as to better adapt to the challenges of climate change, including through the provision of innovative and climate-smart solutions (Result 2). Finally, at the level of the private sector (Kirundo Province and neighbouring areas), the managerial, technical and financial capacities of MSMEs providing processing/conservation/distribution and marketing services for the agri-food sector, are strengthened so as to increase the availability of food with nutritional and hygienic-sanitary qualities for the benefit of the target population, also through the provision of technical innovative solutions (Result 3).Particular Allegato 2_Modello Documento Unico di Progetto_DUP_Bando Promossi 2023 8 attention is given to children <5 years of age particularly affected by chronic malnutrition, which will be monitored to measure the impact of the initiative on food security in the target territory, and to women and young people, who make up 50% of the beneficiaries of the initiative. ICU is the lead applicant, responsible for coordinating the entire initiative with direct responsibility for productive capacity building activities and for innovative technical and climate smart equipment provision; UCBM offers its know-how in nutrition and hygiene in strengthening the knowledge and food hygiene practices of families as well as in nutritional monitoring; AMS brings its expertise on economic development and financial education of families, cooperatives and MSMEs; finally, COPED is responsible for the sustainability of the intervention on the beneficiary families, as well as for the coaching activities aimed at the economic and operational development of cooperatives and MSMEs. The initiative is in line with SDGs: 2 - End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture; 8 - Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all; 12 - Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns; 6 - Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all, and promotes Food security for the rural population and Sustainability along the agri-food chain in the territory of intervention.</narrative>

<narrative xml:lang="en">The initiative increases access to energy to contribute to the resilience and socio-economic development of the rural areas of the provinces of Bujumbura Rural, Ruyigi and Rutana in Burundi; the renewable energy (RE) market is strengthened by acting on two lines: 1) access to solar energy for agricultural AGR, commercial activities, basic health services and households as an enabling factor for development, with professional training and job creation; 2) relying on the "Italian system" and on the experience of the network of private companies involved in the initiative to reduce the barriers to private investment in RE the main driving force behind development.
